In partnership with Architecture Matters and the City of Whittlesea, we undertook a major redevelopment of the Epping Animal Welfare Facility to meet the needs of a growing population. The project expanded the facility’s capacity, accommodating up to 110 dogs, 120 cats, and other small animals in custom-designed, air-conditioned spaces and exercise yards. The facility also includes on-site vet rooms, housing for dangerous dogs, and external yards to accommodate stray livestock.
A flexible, modular design was adopted, allowing for easy future expansion. Sustainable design principles were heavily incorporated, including solar power generation, recycled water use, heat pumps, worm farms, and passive thermal materials.
The design focused on safe animal movement, a high-quality working environment for staff, and humane, healthy accommodations, including “cat condominiums” and sealed dog pens. A large covered yard supports secure management of council vehicles, with additional amenities such as a vehicle wash-out area.
