This award-winning project involved the construction of a brand new 420 seat performing arts theatre for Corpus Christi College in Bateman. External features included a mixture of glazed curtain walling, Equitone panels, honed blockwork and Alucobond panels, extensive exposed aggregate paving, ramps and stairs mixed with soft landscaping to compliment a striking building structure.
The curtain wall glass facade was based on a design and construct scope which included engineering a design solution to satisfy the principal’s brief whilst accommodating the structural design. The glass panels were procured and manufactured overseas due to limitations in local manufacture.
Internally, the finishes are dominated by contemporary Corpus Christi branding from burgundy carpet, mahogany stained doors and a bespoke LED neon light statement piece. Inside the theatre, acoustic Tasmanian Oak panels create a pitch perfect experience for both the performer and audience. The acoustic timber wall paneling was the result of a successful collaboration between McCorkell, the manufacturer and the design team involving detailed shop drawings and various prototypes. The theatre also features a multi-functional orchestral pit allowing for 3 different performance variations including an orchestra, additional temporary seating and a thrust stage.
The project was a joint winner for the ‘Best Education Building $5 – $10m’ awarded by the Master Builders WA in 2019.
