- Energy Efficient Design
This project, consisting of 35 units plus 7 townhouses, was developed for Housing First, an independent, not-for-profit, community housing organization. Housing First provides an alternative to the private rental market or public housing, offering highly architectural yet affordable quality housing options to those in their local community who might otherwise be at risk of homelessness.
Each unit is self-contained with its own kitchen and laundry facilities and finished to a high level of quality. Externally there are shared communal facilities such as a rooftop garden and BBQ facilities in the courtyard. Apart from being affordable, Housing First purposefully provides homes that are environmentally sound, low maintenance and well-integrated alongside existing private housing within the community. For their tenants, the homes are well-appointed, appropriately sized, well located, safe and adaptable to meet the specific needs of the household.
This particular project ran smoothly with the site being effectively utilized to sensitively maximize dwellings in an inner-urban setting. With energy efficiency being a key to the “whole of life” considerations of the design brief, our management of the design and construction ensured the development featured solar hot water services, rainwater harvesting, a rain garden system, energy-efficient appliances, and a natural ventilation control system.
The project was delivered ahead of time and in accordance with strict Federal Government funding conditions.
