PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
- Design & Construct
- Modular Construction Methods
- Regional Construction
McCorkell Constructions was awarded this project as the head contractor in collaboration with a modular builder and Hayball Architects. The modular contractor worked with Hayball to create building designs that aligned with the usual parameters of educational facilities and the construction of the six modular school pods occurred off-site within the contractor’s specialty environment. This ensured that a high quality product was built and the program for construction was controlled.
Transport and installation of the modular classrooms to site was then arranged by our specialised team, who coordinated the drops in the East Gippsland towns of Bairnsdale, Mallacoota, Swift’s Creek, Orbost, and Lakes Entrance. The flexibility of a prefabricated installation allowed us to schedule the deliveries during school breaks, minimising disruption to students, staff and teaching programs.
We provided coordination between all parties and managed all on-site works including demolition and site preparation, substructure, in-ground services, ancillary structures and make good works to existing structures once modules were placed into position.
The teaching facilities each typically included bathrooms, kitchenettes, meeting rooms and classrooms with architectural details including striking rooflines, internal ply, acoustic linings and external decks and pergolas. The Bairnsdale Secondary College unit also included a commercial kitchen training facility.
Co-ordinating the intricate design details dictated by Hayball and making them suitable for modular construction proved to be a difficult task. However, this was overcome through our close working relationship with the modular contractor and keeping lines of communication open.
