PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
- Early Contractor Involvement
- Regional Location
- Adaptive Reuse Project
- Heritage Building Fabric Considerations
- Extensive Structural Interventions
This adaptive reuse project represents Phase One of a larger master plan for the regional community of Kyneton. It involved the restoration and repurposing of a heritage-listed former primary school bluestone building, alongside the construction of a new Link Building. Extensive landscaping, hardscaping, and public realm works have transformed the site into a vibrant multi-use precinct for local creatives and the broader community.
Our team was engaged early to conduct destructive investigation works in collaboration with the consultant team. This early involvement significantly informed the project’s design, guided the required conservation works, and identified potential latent conditions.
At the heart of the site is the 1850s bluestone Kyneton Primary School building, a prominent landmark. The careful redevelopment included selective demolition works, structural reinforcement, new services, slate roof and bell tower restoration, and internal fit-out to prepare the space for future gallery and hospitality uses.
The new Link Building provides an entryway to the existing 1980s school building sharing the site and functions as a versatile event space. Featuring a vaulted timber batten ceiling punctuated by circular skylights, and full-height glazing, the space is flooded with natural light. Minor fit-out works were also completed in the 1980s building, preparing it for a future tenancy. The buildings and precinct are further enhanced with intricate façade and landscape lighting, creating a community beacon after sunset.
