We are delighted to share that the Queen’s Food Hall received the Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings $5-10m Award at this year’s Master Builders Victoria Excellence in Construction Awards.
The MBV Excellence in Construction Awards acknowledge exceptional performance in the construction industry throughout Victoria, awarding the best of the best. This year, the Queen’s Food Hall took out the top prize in its category, amongst a very competitive field of entries, and we are so proud to have taken home the win. The prestigious accolade is a real testament to the hard work of our project team, who ensured the successful completion of this highly technical project.
As part of the QVM Precinct Renewal Program, the newly upgraded Queen’s Food Hall offers an enhanced dining experience with over 60 additional seats, a flexible vendor layout, new flooring, and a permanent steel roof. The project emphasised preserving and integrating the surrounding heritage structures while upgrading infrastructure to meet modern compliance standards.
Inspired by the nearby fresh food markets, the hall features a minimalist design, showcasing heritage brickwork and an exposed steel roof with an industrial feel. The material palette is limited to steel, brick, concrete, and terrazzo, with curved steel elements and a suspended concrete culvert planter, acting as a focal point that pays homage to the unique ambience of the market.
During this project, our team faced numerous challenges that required innovative construction techniques and specialised installation procedures. Delivering this award-winning project demanded meticulous attention to technical details and extensive collaboration between our team, the consultants, and the trades involved.
Despite the complexities, our team persevered, ultimately delivering a project distinguished by exceptional workmanship. This project stands as one of the most complex we have ever undertaken. The recognition from Master Builders Victoria through this award is a testament to our resilience and unwavering commitment to excellence.
The revitalised Queen’s Food Hall now serves as a vibrant hub, seamlessly connecting with the precinct, celebrating Melbourne’s multiculturalism, and boosting business for market traders.
