The Former Royal Melbourne Mint is of State significance and is both heritage-listed and under a heritage overlay. Our team were engaged by Working Heritage to preserve the 1870s perimeter masonry retaining walls and fence of the Royal Melbourne Mint which were showing signs of deflection. It was agreed that this project also presented an opportunity to enhance the existing car park environment and address safety concerns by providing new lighting, green space and landscaping.
The structural remediation works to the wall involved installing bored piers, ground anchoring and concrete hollow-core planks. The car park improvement works involved widening the precinct entrance, upgrading the car park lighting, new landscaping and the addition of some street furniture.
WHAT LIES BENEATH
The structural rectification works to heritage walls required extensive civil and retention works within the site boundary. This consisted of retention piles, capping beams and ground anchors to create a cavity behind the historic structure. This cavity alleviated the weight load on the wall to prevent further deflection.
Precast concrete flooring planks were also installed over the cavity to allow pavements and landscaping to be reinstated.
The busy CBD location and fully operational Hellenic Museum on site made for challenging access at times however, our project team achieved practical completion on time whilst exceeding budget expectations.
