Grimwade House is the co-educational junior school of Melbourne Grammar School catering to the educational needs of some 550 boys and girls from prep to grade 6.
The Upper Primary Precinct provides a home base for grades 5 and 6 in three interlinked buildings centred around an outdoor deck and atrium space. The project included two refurbished 1960s classroom buildings, an added infill building and a glass-roofed atrium with interlinked balconies. The new space provides eight classrooms with staff resource rooms, an art studio, a library, an IT studio with technician facilities and three music practice rooms.
The project integrated numerous environmental, energy and sustainability measures based on the Green Star rating tool. Special attention was applied to the thermal performance of the existing and new structures with controlled use of double glazing with external shading, natural cross ventilation including a night-purge mode, and a thermal labyrinth was created under the library to temper fresh air. Additionally, rainwater is collected off all roofs including the adjoining buildings and photovoltaic panels were incorporated into the glass atrium roof.
