Replacing a facility that served residents for nearly five decades, the new Kensington Community Aquatic & Recreation Centre delivers a modern, inclusive and high-quality environment designed for a growing and diverse population.
The aquatic precinct includes an eight-lane 25m pool with ramp access, delivered in part through the careful retention and integration of a portion of the existing pool shell. It also includes a heated learn-to-swim pool, a dedicated children’s water play area and an outdoor splash pad. For culturally safe swimming, the entire pool hall can be fully screened using ceiling-mounted privacy curtains.
Alongside the aquatic facilities, the centre features three full-sized indoor multi-sports courts supporting grassroots participation through to elite-level competition. Each court is fitted with roof-mounted retractable FIBA-certified basketball systems, wireless scoring, low-mass Competition Posts for Netball, Futsal and Badminton, and retractable divider curtains. Integrated spectator seating enhances community engagement, while the adjoining entry foyer, members lounge and café activate the precinct.
On Level 1, a 24-hour access gym offers the latest cardio, strength and functional training equipment, complemented by a dedicated recovery zone. Three purpose-built group fitness studios – including Reformer Pilates – deliver a full program of classes for all ages and abilities.
Early works revealed extensive subsurface hazardous materials across the site, requiring a detailed investigation and the development of a specialist remediation strategy. Significant removal and remediation works were completed prior to the commencement of new construction, ensuring the site was made safe and compliant.
This landmark project for both McCorkell and the local community provides a versatile, future-ready facility that will support health, recreation and connection in Kensington for generations to come.
