This Design & Construct project delivered three new buildings, thoughtfully designed in collaboration with the school to support the unique needs of its students.
The new Classroom Building offers flexible shared learning spaces, staff rooms, storage, and amenities. The Therapy Building provides dedicated consultation spaces for physiotherapy and occupational therapy, along with supporting staff facilities. Partway through the project, with works tracking ahead of both program and budget, the client elected to expand the scope to include a third facility — the Arts Building. Initially only at schematic design stage, this addition was successfully incorporated into the works and delivered alongside the original scope. It features spacious art and music rooms, each with adjoining storage and a staff office to support creative learning.
Each building is brought to life with vibrant pillars and coloured brick façades, creating an inviting, engaging environment. The design of the buildings carefully considered the complex specialist requirements unique to a Special Developmental School of this nature — including access, detailing, and fixtures — ensuring the final result truly supports its student cohort. External works included a new bike path, landscaped play areas, an interactive garden, fencing, and inclusive outdoor equipment.
Located between two operational schools, the project required careful planning to manage access and minimise disruption. Significant service diversions and enabling works were completed during the initial Christmas school holiday period, allowing the main construction to commence without impacting the school’s operations. Throughout the build, proactive stakeholder engagement and the strategic scheduling of disruptive works outside of school hours were key in maintaining a safe and uninterrupted learning environment.
