The Castlemaine Goods Shed, a Victorian-era freight building dating back to the 1860s, has been transformed into a contemporary, high-performance creative facility through this landmark adaptive reuse project.
Delivered under a Design & Construct contract, early collaboration enabled design intent and constructability to be aligned from the outset. As the second stage of the broader redevelopment plan, this phase built on the office and workspace upgrades completed in 2020, further evolving the site into a premier performing arts venue and community creative hub.
Our scope included structural strengthening, services upgrades, restoration works, and enhancements to the existing performance space. Heritage brickwork along the VicTrack easement was meticulously restored using locally sourced materials, while structural issues within the western deck and balustrade were resolved through careful reconstruction that preserved the building’s historic character. The integration of new steelwork with existing timber trusses required precise coordination to balance heritage fabric with modern performance requirements.
Internally, we delivered a flexible multi-purpose performance and exhibition space with upgraded lighting, rigging, acoustic treatment, and back-of-house amenities – equipping the venue for year-round programming. The revitalised Goods Shed now stands as a central hub for the Castlemaine State Festival and a vital resource for regional artists and the community.
